This Privacy Policy explains how Luxury Safari (www.luxurysafari.co.za) collects, uses, stores and protects your personal information when you visit our website, comment on our articles, subscribe to notifications or contact us. We process personal information in line with South Africa’s Protection of Personal Information Act 4 of 2013 (POPIA) and, where it applies to visitors from the European Union or United Kingdom, the General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR).
1. Who we are
The responsible party for personal information collected through this website is Beachbum Trading (Pty) Ltd, a company registered in South Africa (“we”, “us”, “our”).
Information Officer: Dirk
Email: accounts@beachbum.co.za
2. What personal information we collect
We only collect what we need. Depending on how you use the site, this may include:
- Enquiries and contact forms: your name, email address, phone number (if given) and the details of your message or travel enquiry.
- Comments: your name, email address, the comment itself, your IP address and browser details, which help us detect spam.
- Newsletter: if you subscribe, your email address, your name (if given), the date you subscribed and whether you open or click our emails.
- Push notifications: if you opt in, a device or browser identifier so we can send you notifications about new articles.
- Usage information: pages visited, time on site, referring website, approximate location (country or city), device and browser type, collected through cookies and similar technologies.
We do not knowingly collect special personal information (such as health, religious or biometric information), and we ask that you don’t include it in enquiries or comments.
3. Why we use your information
- To respond to your enquiries and messages.
- To publish and moderate comments, and to protect the site against spam and abuse.
- To send our newsletter and push notifications you have subscribed to.
- To understand how visitors use the site so we can improve our content.
- To display advertising that helps keep the site free to read.
- To meet our legal obligations.
We process personal information on the basis of your consent, to respond to a request you have made, to comply with the law, or for our legitimate interests in running and protecting the website, as permitted by section 11 of POPIA.
4. Cookies and advertising
Cookies are small text files stored on your device. We use them to keep the site working, to measure traffic and to show advertising.
We use Google AdSense to display ads. Google and its partners use cookies to serve ads based on your previous visits to this and other websites. You can opt out of personalised advertising at Google Ads Settings, and learn more about how Google uses information at How Google uses information from sites that use its services. You can also opt out of some third-party vendors’ use of cookies at aboutads.info.
We also use Google Analytics (through Google Site Kit) to understand how visitors use the site in aggregate. You can install the Google Analytics opt-out browser add-on if you’d prefer not to be included. You can block or delete cookies in your browser settings, although some parts of the site may not work as intended if you do.
5. Who we share information with
We do not sell your personal information. We share it only with service providers (operators) who help us run the website, under agreements that require them to keep it secure and confidential. These include our web hosting provider, Google (advertising and analytics), Automattic (Jetpack and Akismet spam filtering), MailPoet (newsletter delivery), Formidable Forms (contact and enquiry forms) and OneSignal (push notifications).
If you send us a safari enquiry and ask us to put you in touch with a tour operator or lodge, we will share your details with that operator only with your consent. We may also disclose information where the law requires it.
6. Transfers outside South Africa
Some of our service providers store or process information outside South Africa, for example in the United States or the European Union. Where this happens, we rely on providers that are subject to laws, binding agreements or corporate rules that offer a level of protection substantially similar to POPIA, as required by section 72 of the Act.
7. How long we keep it
We keep personal information only as long as we need it for the purpose it was collected, or as long as the law requires. Enquiry emails are kept for up to two years. Published comments stay on the site until you ask us to remove them. Analytics and advertising data are retained according to the providers’ own retention settings.
8. How we protect it
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to protect your information against loss, damage and unauthorised access, including an encrypted (HTTPS) connection, security software, restricted administrator access and regular updates. No system is completely secure, but if a breach affecting your information occurs, we will notify you and the Information Regulator as POPIA requires.
9. Your rights
Under POPIA (and the GDPR, if it applies to you), you have the right to:
- ask whether we hold personal information about you and request a copy of it;
- ask us to correct or delete information that is inaccurate, out of date, excessive or unlawfully obtained;
- object to our processing of your information, including for direct marketing;
- withdraw consent at any time, without affecting processing that took place before you withdrew it;
- unsubscribe from push notifications through your browser or device settings; and
- lodge a complaint with the Information Regulator.
To exercise any of these rights, email accounts@beachbum.co.za. We may ask you to verify your identity before acting on a request, and we will respond within a reasonable time.
10. Direct marketing
We will only send you our newsletter or other marketing communications if you have opted in. Every email includes an unsubscribe link, and you can opt out at any time. Unsubscribing removes you from future mailings; to have your subscriber record deleted entirely, email us at the address above.
11. Children
This website is intended for adults planning travel. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 18. If you believe a child has given us their information, please contact us and we will delete it.
12. Links to other websites
Our articles link to other websites, such as park authorities, lodges and news sources. We are not responsible for their privacy practices, so please read their policies when you visit them.
13. Complaints
If you have a concern about how we handle your information, please contact us first so we can try to resolve it. You also have the right to lodge a complaint with South Africa’s Information Regulator through its website, inforegulator.org.za. Visitors in the EU or UK may also contact their local data protection authority.
14. Changes to this policy
We may update this policy from time to time. The latest version will always be on this page, with the date it was last updated at the top.
